Assignment 3

 

The social media application I will be talking about is Instagram. On average, I spend about two hours a day on Instagram. I only have access to Instagram on my phone, so that is the platform I frequently go on. When I was in high school, I used to open Instagram on my laptop as well if I did not have my phone on me, or when I posted something new and was nosy to see how my post was doing without going on my phone. I notice that I go on Instagram even when there is no purpose or even when I just got out of the application. But usually when I do go on it, I like posts/stories, watch stories or reels my friends send me, comment on people's post, or share posts that are related to the organization I am a part of, or even look for resources.

I don't have a pattern of when I go throughout the day. But I notice that when I go on my phone at night before I go to sleep, I don't usually go on Instagram because I would go on TikTok instead. I know for certain that last school year I was on Instagram a lot more frequently than I currently do this school year, and that is because I was also Public Relations chair last school year for the Vietnamese Student Association, which means I was in charge of all the social media for the organization.

I believe time of the semester affects my Instagram usage. On weeks where I have more assignments or exams due, I tend to check Instagram less. Similarly, when I am out with my friends and other people, I do not usually check Instagram as much. I realize I have the habit of mindlessly checking Instagram when I am at home most of the time.

Sometimes I connect with certain people on Instagram rather than other social media apps. When I go on Instagram, I tend to scroll through what is on my story feed or my post feed. I don't like to check my direct messages on the app, but I do have a few people I talk on Instagram as the main form of contact.

I would like to say less than half the time I go on Instagram, I am pretty productive and have a purpose. The remaining percentage.. well.. it's my thumb's muscle memory.

Personally, I believe that media is a place where people can social network and connect with one another. It is a free space where people can share and express their thoughts and statuses. Some of the social networking sites I use include: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, TikTok, and Snapchat. Instagram is probably the social networking site that I use the most out of all the ones I have listed. A little about me My name is Jennifer Pham. I usually go by Jenny :) I am from Lutz, Florida, which is about a 30-minute drive to USF Tampa campus. I am a third-year Health Sciences major with a dual concentration in Biological Health Sciences and Health Information Technology. My first fun fact about myself would be that I am the Vice President External of the Vietnamese Student Association at USF. As VPE, I plan a lot of the bigger shows/banquets for students, such as the our Lunar New Year one coming up on Sunday, January 29th in the MSC Ballroom (free and open to everyone). I am usually the main contact when it comes to collaborating with other student organizations and come up with itineraries and manage performances for VSA events! My second fun fact about me is that I love to fan dance. My group and I dance to Vietnamese pop songs, so it is a nice cultural dance with a hint of modern. We Are Data Response: LJ2

From the We Are Data reading, I felt that it focused a lot on self-identity and how much information and dat a is being shared out there. I felt that this reading was very genuine and honest about the views of online identity. It mentions a lot about how the information we see on social media does not necessarily represent the reality. On page 6, Cheney-Lippold states how our true, authentic self is now put in the past due to the sharing of data and information. He adds on by saying that the algorithm on different platforms also mold us into different versions of ourselves. I would say this is very true as we will not always find ourselves seeing exactly the same content or exact content that represents who we are. Or if we watch or search for something that does not represent the stereotypical age and gender of ourselves, the website will assume the stereotype, rather than who you really are.
