Hands-On Assignment 2

Personally, I believe that media is a place where people can social network and connect with one another. It is a free space where people can share and express their thoughts and statuses. Some of the social networking sites I use include: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, TikTok, and Snapchat.

Instagram is probably the social networking site that I use the most out of all the ones I have listed. I use this to communicate with people as well as share events coming up that I am a part of, or just share anything that I feel like sharing.

Facebook is a a social networking site that I don't use that often. I tend to follow celebrities on there and see what they are up to. Sometimes I scroll through my family's post too. I check Facebook once a week on average. I hardly use it as a platform to post.

Next, I use Twitter the least out of the social media I have listed. I only look at funny posts. I used to tweet, but it has been a long time since I have. I would say I open Twitter once every 2 or 3 months.

Youtube is a social networking site I use pretty regularly for entertainment. I like to watch Day in My Life vlogs or Vietnamese TV Shows on there.

I open TikTok every night, since it puts me to sleep. This app is also used as a form of entertainment. I like how each video is short, which keeps me attentive.

Snapchat I do not use too often, although I do open it everyday. I use this app to communicate with others. In middle school, I would keep streaks, however, I now only have a streak with three people, max.

Using social media of choice helps me express myself to my friends and family. It makes me feel connected to everyone virtually, however, distanced in real life since everyone is so focused on the screen nowadays. Most of the time I feel optimistic about social media. However, if there are controversial topics or disagreements and misunderstandings going around, it makes me feel sad.

We Are Data Response: LJ2

From the We Are Data reading, I felt that it focused a lot on self-identity and how much information and dat a is being shared out there. I felt that this reading was very genuine and honest about the views of online identity. It mentions a lot about how the information we see on social media does not necessarily represent the reality. On page 6, Cheney-Lippold states how our true, authentic self is now put in the past due to the sharing of data and information. He adds on by saying that the algorithm on different platforms also mold us into different versions of ourselves. I would say this is very true as we will not always find ourselves seeing exactly the same content or exact content that represents who we are. Or if we watch or search for something that does not represent the stereotypical age and gender of ourselves, the website will assume the stereotype, rather than who you really are.
