Opinions on Social Media: LJ1
Prompt 1:
Social media is one of the top reasons I reach for my phone. A personal do for social media is being mindful of others and anyone who can view your content. This goes for sharing personal information as well as sharing certain things you want or don't want people seeing. A don't for social media would be to avoid comparing yourself to others. Though this may sound cliche, it is a reminder I believe everyone needs. Everyone's lives are different and whatever is being portrayed on social media isn't necessarily all truth, so it isn't worth our energy. I would say I started having social media later compared to other peers at my age. I first had Snapchat in 2016 and Instagram in 2018. I used to post selfies pretty often on both apps. Now, since I am involved in different organizations and on campus, I post fliers or pictures to promote different events. I have gone from posting only myself on social media to posting about things I am a part of. Something I wished I had known about social media before I had it, would be that it isn't serious. To some people, they may have social media as part of their jobs, but for most, it is just for fun and share memories.
Prompt 2:
I think social media and self expression works on both ends of the spectrum. Sometimes people over express, which can create conflicts depending on how controversial a topic is. When people under express, it can cause misunderstandings between both parties. Personally, I like selfies. I take them, and a lot of my friends also take them. But I don't post them like I used to. I would only post them on my stories, which disappears after a day. In addition, online images don't portray the full picture of everyone's lives. I personally don't like to think too deep into online images. In terms of rules for posting, I feel like there are some universal unspoken rules about posting certain things. In general, social media is free play and a creative space for many people, so everyone will have different criteria on how or when they want things posted. A common topic that is brought up when discussing about social media is comparing yourself to others. It is hard to completely not compare yourself to others, as it is a natural instinct. I feel like I have gotten better about not comparing myself to others since everyone comes from different backgrounds and is in different stages in their life. It can be very discouraging and detrimental to one's mental health if you constantly compare yourself. Social media should be a space for everyone to proudly share who you are. Finally, quitting social media is also a hot topic. I think it is important to take breaks and live life instead of always having our eyes attached to social media and tapping through posts. I have never quitted social media before, due to some obligations I have, however, it can be nice to just stay on Do Not Disturb and not check social media.
